Roller Coaster Tycoon… A Classic

RollerCoaster Tycoon

Roller Coaster Tycoon is a game surely many may remember. This classic computer game title has you playing as an amusement park manager. Each level you are tasked with an objective to achieve before a certain time. You are to complete challenges such as, bringing more guest into the park, raising the park value, or getting a high park rating. The world’s open ended and your to design how you please. You will have to build roller coasters, shops, bathrooms, hire staff, manage expenses, add paths, adjust landscape, and even add in colorful scenery to be successful.I personally have loved this game since the very first time someone showed it to me. I had a knack for building good roller coasters that could bring in a lot of profit. I recently re-installed Roller Coaster Tycoon 2onto my computer and was instantly sucked back into the game like old times. When playing this game hours will just go on by with out you realizing it. Because once you start a park you can’t help but want to make it bigger and better. In one sitting I managed two parks, both of which were highly successful. The second park was so successful I paid the majority of the financial loan off on the park, had 400 more guests in the park than I needed to win the challenge by the end of the time limit, and was still making lots of money to built more, bigger and better, rides.

The possibilities of what you can create in a roller coaster are near endless in this game. Their are dozens of different kinds of rides to build for your guests. All ranging from fast and intense, to gentle and slow. Rides can be built into the ground, really high in the air, and even through scenery or other rides. Each ride after it is built and tested will show you results on how exciting, intense, and nauseating it is. If your ride is not balanced right in these categories then people will not ride it.

Your guests in the park are what brings in the money for you. Some parks will have you only charging money at the door, or only charging guest for rides on the roller coasters. Either way you must think logically to become successful. All the while appealing to your guests needs. Some guests will puke, throw trash on the ground, vandalize property, or just get lost. That is why you have to hire the right amount of staff to prevent things like this. Your staff consists of custodians, security guards, mechanics (to inspect and fix rides) and even mascots (to entertain guests). A good theme park has their guests interest in mind when designing new rides or adding a new shop locations. Roller Coasters can either be built from scratch or, if you have the room, choose from a large selection of pre-designed rides; some of the rides are even real Six Flags roller coasters. Trust me there is plenty more to this game than just this.

Once you complete a challenge and wanna have a little vengeance on your guests there are many options for you to choose. Such as firing all your clean up and security staff could be one way which will leave the park looking gross and destroyed. You can pick up your guest and drop them in water to drown them. Trap your guests in random holes that they can not get out of. Launch/crash roller coasters off their tracks. Or if you are for a more covert approach you could even charge money for people to use the bathroom in the park; why not when you’re trying to make a buck right? With all these kinds of options that is why Roller Coaster Tycoon is such a great title.

Roller Coaster Tycoon was first released in 1999. It was created by programmer Chris Sawyer. And with the help of publisher Hasbro Interactive they released Chris’s masterpiece to the world. Though this game was a “sleeper hit” it still made enough noise developers went on to created numerous expansion packs. Eventually the game was sold to Infogrames, which you may know now as Atari.

Now I loved the first two Roller Coaster Tycoon titles, but when I got my hands on Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, by Atari, I was very disappointed. The third game differed from the first two. The design, look, controls, and ride construction scheme was very different from the previous titles. It made designing roller coaster more difficult and management of the park was not as smooth. Though the only thing that had a chance to redeem Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 to be as good of a title as the games under Hasbro’s design was, you could ride your own rides. You were able to take a seat in your own roller coaster, ride every loop and hill. But there is some good news that I want to report to you. Their is a new Roller Coaster Tycoon coming out this year; RollerCoaster Tycoon 3D!

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3D is said to be coming out soon. It is the fourth installment to the series and will be the first portable edition in the series. That is because it will be exclusively released on the Nintendo 3DS. If you want to see a trailer and learn more about this game just check out the official website, click here.

If you are interested in playing the original RollerCoaster Tycoon game you could probably find a copy on the internet along with the expansion packs or you could just download the game straight to your computer. Just click here to visit the site where you can download your free copy. I hope you have enjoyed my post about RollerCoaster Tycoon. I also hope if you download or purchase the game that you enjoy it just as I have. And until next time Game on…

  1. Oh man, this brings me back. I’d spend hours making roller coasters that were designed solely to launch my prisoners…I mean guests… off the tracks and into a lake or mountain side. Then after this happened everyone would be afraid to ride it so I’d have to tear the ride down and build a new one, slightly different this time, to give some more guests the ride of their life. Muahaha.

Good times. I’ve never played 2 or 3 but can’t say I’ve ever wanted to. I think I lost enough hours in the original.

    • jdh5153 my man. I did the same thing!!! Then after I complete the levels I would destroy every ride possible. HAha Mass destruction. Well back in the day I would. But anywho, love the comment, thanks. Like I said 3 is horrible because someone else made it not Chris. But 2 is awesome and with Expansion packs it makes them even better. There is a downloadable copy of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 online. Game on bro!
