Classic DK NES Throwback

Donkey_Kong_flierThat is right Average Retro Gamer fans, for the new year we are traveling back in time to relive a video game classic. Released back in 1981, this title sparked two gaming icons. Donkey Kong, an arcade game that started off a game character legend, Mario and DK.

This original arcade title, that was later released on NES and Game Boy, was only 4 levels (NES version is 3 levels). In which you played as Jumpman, more known as Mario. You are on a mission to save the princess from the big bad monkey. Donkey Kong, the monkey, at his first appearance in this title as the villain. In DK’s next game he takes on more of a hero roll. But the whole object of the game Donkey Kong is to avoid getting hit by the objects that DK throws, and the moving fireballs. You complete the level once you reach the lady.

  • Screen 1 (25 m), Jumpman must scale a seven-story construction site made of crooked girders and ladders while jumping over or hammering barrels and oil barrels tossed by Donkey Kong. The hero must also avoid flaming balls, which generate when an oil barrel collides with an oil drum. Players routinely call this screen “Barrels”.
  • Screen 2 (50 m), Jumpman must climb a five-story structure of conveyor belts, each of which transports cement pans. The fireballs also make another appearance. This screen is sometimes referred to as the “Factory” or “Pie Factory” due to the resemblance of the cement pans to pies.
  • Screen 3 (75 m), Jumpman rides up and down elevators while avoiding fireballs and bouncing objects, presumably spring weights. The bouncing weights (the hero’s greatest danger in this screen) emerge on the top level and drop near the rightmost elevator. The screen’s common name is “Elevators”. This screen appears as an unlockable stage in Super Smash Bros Brawl
  • Screen 4 (100 m), Jumpman must remove the eight rivets which support Donkey Kong. The fireballs remain the primary obstacle. Removing the final rivet causes Donkey Kong to fall and the hero to be reunited with Lady/Pauline. This is the final screen of each level. Players refer to this screen as “Rivets”

Donkey Kong was one of the first arcade games to have an actual story to the gameplay. Donkey Kong is the pet of a carpenter named Jumpman The carpenter mistreats the ape, so Donkey Kong escapes and kidnaps Jumpman’s girlfriend, originally known as the Lady. The player must take the role of Jumpman and rescue the girl. This was the first occurrence of the damsel in distress scenario that would provide the template for countless video games to come.

This game is one that many retro gamers should remember. It was the start of a new kind of gaming, with stories. Donkey Kong was also the first title that later became a very memorable gaming icon. Without this game Mario may not be who he is today. While I can only get to the second level of the game, check out this youtube footage of a professional at this game. Enjoy, and until next time game on.
