Softmoding a Wii

Hello Average Retro Gamer fans. Today I will show you all that you may want to know about moding your Wii. Lets look at some question you may have before we begin.

What is softmod?

Softmod is where you modify your software in the Wii to access and use the Wii’s hardware to do whatever you please.

What is different about a non-mod and a mod’ed Wii?

A modified Wii can play virtually any Nintendo game, play DVD’s, sega and have PS1 games loaded onto it.

Why should I Softmod my Wii?
My thought behind modifying the Wii, is like “setting it free”. With a modified Wii you can easily just download a game from any generation, load it onto a SD or USB card and play until your heart is content.

Is it hard to mod my Wii?
No it is not hard to modify your Wii, will just take a little time, patients and possibly money (if you don’t have what you need already). But in the long run you can save money. You will no longer have to buy games from Nintendo!

Is it safe to Mod my Wii?
Modifying your Wii will void the warranty, not to mention there is a possibility in making it inoperable (AKA bricking). But if you do it right and have the correct files you will be able to do this easily with no problems.

What will I need?
You will need a few things:
SD card 2gb or higher
PC with SD card reader or a USB SD card reader
7zip or Winrar program
USB I recommend 32gb or more
Wii-mote
Gamecube controller or Wii classic controller
Gamecube memory card (if you choose to add those games)

Ok now that we have gone over some of the basic questions and answers let me show you how I modified my Wii. Note that I did not add everything you can mod on your Wii, because I didn’t have the space or couldn’t find a good file to make it work.

Homebrew steps

First you will need to install what is called the Homebrew channel. The homebrew channel “unlocks” your Wii so that you can load all the files and emulators needed. just go to this link and download the letter bomb. This will help you easily install homebrew. Before visiting the link write down your Wii’s Mac address. Enter in your Wii’s address, fill in the spot to prove you are human, and cut the red or blue wire (doesn’t matter which one). http://please.hackmii.com

Second you have the letterbomb.zip file all you do is plug the SD card into your computer and unzip the content of the .zip folder onto your SD card. Eject the SD card from your PC and put it into your Wii.

Third on the Wii, head on over to the Wii Message Center. There’s going to be a new message for you with a bomb on it, maybe in yesterdays mail just search for it. Now pull the trigger to open the mail. The process will take about a minute, so be patient. You’ll have a hacked Wii when it’s done!

If you run into any issues along the way it’s probably because you don’t have the right version of the Wii System Menu. If you try to use LetterBomb with the wrong version, it’ll freeze your Wii. Not to worry—just force-reboot your Wii, make sure you update properly, and try again. Obviously you want to do the update beforehand, but in the event you forget it’s not really a big deal.

Fourth once LetterBomb has done its thing, it’ll tell you to press 1 to continue. Do that and you’ll be able to use your WiiMote to start installing things. What you’re really interested in is the Homebrew Channel.

Now that you have homebrew up and running you will want to start installing your emulator channels.

This is link to the program you will need to load Wii .iso files onto the USB: How to play Wii backups from a USB

Now that you have loaded HomeBrew Channel and visited the links above now you want to load some games onto your unlocked Wii. Here are the links to help you get what you need and the directions on how to do it!

Ninetendo: FCE Ultra GX

Super Nintendo: Snes9x page

Nintendo64: Wii64

I have not figured out how to put gamecube games on a USB to play on the Wii but I know you can. Other things you can do with a softmod Wii are, Play DVDs, game hacks, Etc.

I would like to remind you while doing this to your Wii successfully is awesome! You do run the risk of bricking your Wii. Which means it will make it a glorified paper weight. So be very careful what you load into it and how you go through the steps. Read and visit all the links I provided and do your research before committing to the mod. I hope all this helps you. It took me time and effort to get my Wii to work how I wanted it too. If you have any questions or comments please post them below. I’d love to hear the feed back. Until next time game on…
